Depending on the size, industry, geography and complexity of the HR function within an organization, a general rule of thumb is:
• 1-49 employees: Outsource HR functions that exceed the bandwidth of internal roles
• 50-99 employees: Designate a part-time and/or fractional HR leader
• 100+ employees: This is where we commonly see a tipping point. Most organizations may hire their first HR professional due to the increasing complexity of federal and state employment laws, increasing employee relations situations, and increasing hiring and onboarding needs, etc.
